April Showers Bring May Flowers

As the old saying goes, “April showers brings May flowers”; I am reminded of a couple of April fun facts I remember finding in the Farmer’s Almanac.

Did you know that “April” comes from the Latin word aperio, meaning “to open or bud”?

April birth flowers are the daisy and the sweet pea.

A favorite April flower to plant is the Morning Glory. Do you want an easy and striking flower to grow this season? April is the month that the ground is warm enough to plant Morning Glory seeds. Morning glory is a spring/summer perennial that’s easy to start from seed. If you soak the Morning glory’s seeds overnight, they will germinate faster than direct soil planting.  It’s an ever blooming trumpet flower in an array of colors that bloom until first frost on a trellis, fence, arbor or just about anything it can climb.  Bees, moths, butterflies and hummingbirds will travel to visit these showy blooms. The Morning glory needs a bit of water to get started and then minimal water to maintain.   Each flower lasts only one day but, new ones take their place to greet you the next morning.

Wanting to attract humming birds to your garden? Consider planting Bee Balm, Butterfly Bush, Columbine, Scarlet Sage, Pentas or Petunias in your garden this season. Rockport has a humming bird festival every year. This year it is September 13-16, 2018 with the purpose is to celebrate the spectacular fall migration of the Ruby-throated hummingbird through the area.
